Phantom Pregnancy

 

Phantom pregnancy in bitches is more common than you would think and can be a problem for the bitch. Signs appear 6-8 weeks after she has been in season and a bitch that has suffered a false pregnancy is more likely to experience it again with the symptoms getting progressively worse each time.

 

Things to watch out for are:-

 

          Abdominal enlargement

          Enlargement of the mammary glands

          Lactation (milk production)

          Nesting behaviours

          Nursing of toys

          Guarding of nest area or puppy substitutes

          Vomiting

          Depression

          Lethargy

          Diarrhoea

          Panting/breathlessness

 

You should consult your vet if you think your bitch is suffering from a phantom pregnancy.
